Just days after our state shutdown on March 13, I grabbed by trusty 4x5 wooden camera and set out in the pre-dawn hour and walked 4 1/2 miles to one of my favorite places on earth… The Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve. I needed to get away and the long walk was the perfect thing to get my head right. It was a surreal experience, for the first time in my life I got to experience this beautiful stretch of beach without the usual stream of cars, trucks and un-muffled dune buggies, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. It was a unique experience that I doubt I will get to experience again in my lifetime. The quiet in the dunes made them even more spectacular than usual!

My photographs captured with my wooden camera on B&W film during my backpacking adventures.
A famous photographer once stated that there wasn’t anything worth photographing more than 100 yards from the car.
I hope to challenge that claim with photographs I have made on foot while on multi-day backpacking trips.

I've been fortunate to be able to travel the world and I've seen some amazing sights, but nothing can really compare to the view from Tunnel View when a storm is breaking up. In 2009, after a few days of waiting for the storm to clear enough to make images, there was finally an opening in the storm. As soon as the storm started to break, I headed up to Tunnel View to check conditions. As I stood next to my tripod for hours in a freezing, drizzly rain, I watched clouds cling to the cliffs while fog magically grew out of the trees on the valley floor. What was most amazing was the fact that I had this normally crowded vista to myself. Every once in a while, a car would break the silence and stop at the turnout and one of the occupants would roll down the window a crack to take a quick snapshot and slowly drive away on the icy roads.
Not long before sunset, the clouds parted just enough to get a glimpse of El Capitan. I pushed the plunger and within seconds the clouds moved back into obscure the gigantic monolith and the light faded away.

After a couple of days in the valley with unfavorable conditions for photography, I awoke on Christmas morning in 2015 to the greatest gift a photographer can receive! "Dam Hetch Hetchy! As well dam for water-tanks the people’s cathedrals and churches, for no holier temple has ever been consecrated by the heart of man." - John Muir
The O'Shaunesy Dam in Yosemite National Park is one of the most controversial environmental projects ever constructed in the USA. In 1919, the city of San Francisco commenced building a dam inside of a national park. The valley floor has not been seen since the dam was completed in 1923.

A lack of snow at the beginning of Winter in 2011 delivered a rare opportunity to visit Tenaya Lake in the high country of Yosemite National Park in January. My daughter Kalei and I headed up the Tioga Road and spent the day ice skating all over this high elevation lake. As the sun started to dip in the sky, we ditched the skates and grabbed our cameras and walked out onto the ice at the West end of the lake. With my trusty 4x5 camera, we found some amazing compositions of the cracked ice that surrounded some partially submerged boulders until the sun finally set.

The Cathedral Spires in Yosemite are one of those iconic landmarks that I've often viewed with wonder, but never really found the right conditions to photograph it. In 2009, weather in the valley was less than ideal for photography. As I was out scouting for locations in the afternoon, the sun broke through the clouds behind the spires. I quickly set up the 4x5 camera with the longest lens in my kit and waited for the clouds to clear just enough to see the spires and the sun. Copyright 2009 Robert Oliver

After spending 3 cloudless days camping on the rugged, unpaved White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park, we were hurrying back to Moab when we saw this rock outcropping clinging to a cliff hundreds of feet above the mighty Colorado River. The sun was moving between some newly formed clouds as it descended rapidly towards the western horizon. I pulled off to the side of the old mining road and quickly setup my 4x5 camera and composed this image as fast as I could and got back en route to Moab. Copyright 2018 Robert Oliver.
I had heard about a place called Yellow Rock in Utah for years. I decided to check it out after spending a few days in Canyonlands National Park. After reading the description of how to find the trailhead in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, I set off late in the afternoon to find this scenic, seldom visited spot. After heading into the wrong canyon to find the trail, I had to backtrack across overgrown riparian zone and cross back over the Cottonwood Creek and head towards the canyon opening farther towards the Southwest. A number of cairns marked the loose, scree covered trail that scaled up the canyon walls and onto the amazing plateau called Yellow Rock. I got up to the top just minutes before the sun disappeared behind the ridge for the night. I spotted this log sitting on the texted sandstone and hurriedly set up my 4x5 camera. I was able to fire off 3 sheets of film before the sun disappeared behind the mountain. Copyright 2018 Robert Oliver.

Oceano Dunes - Oceano Dunes Nature Preserve. 2006
One of my all-time favorite landscape images that I’ve taken. I created this image just when I was starting to get serious about large format photography.I had just stepped down from my Senior Photographer position at a sports magazine and was just starting college to earn my teaching credential.
When I was young, I spent a lot of time in this exact section of dunes riding horses and playing in the sand, so these sand hills hold a special place in my heart. I hiked out into the dunes about an hour before sunrise using a headlamp. I remember setting up “the sunrise” shot before the sun came up, but as soon as the sun appeared above the horizon I realized that the light was wrong. I shouldered my tripod mounted camera and continued searching somewhat hastily. I had hiked around this big dune and hurriedly set up my 4x5 camera just after sunrise. I had my dog Zoey with me (RIP best dog ever!) and just as I was getting ready to take my first picture Zoey ran into the scene wanting to play, destroying the perfect wind sculpted sand ripples. I quickly moved my camera to a clean foreground and rapidly recomposed for this image. (I later learned that dogs were not allowed in this area)
